Egypt's Grill Giant Aboushakra Is Going Through a ‘Split’

Abou Shakra, the long-standing Egyptian grill house established in 1947, has entered a new phase. Following an internal restructure, the brand has split, with a new offshoot emerging under the name Al Abou Shakra - led by four members of the founding family.

The rebrand retains the family name while signalling a generational shift. “Four siblings, one table, where every dish tells a story and every meal feels like home,” reads a line from the new concept’s launch.

“It all started with our grandfather, the man who planted the seeds of Abou Shakra with passion, grit, and a deep love for food that brought people together,” Ahmed Ahmed Abou Shakra, COO of Al Abou Shakra tells Scene Eats. “Our father, Ahmed Abou Shakra, carried that legacy forward with care and vision. And now, as CEO, he’s handed us the space and trust to carry the story forward, each in our own way.”

The relaunch includes a refreshed menu, shaped collectively by the four siblings. While familiar items remain - such as the brand’s signature kofta - new additions include quick warm bowls, lighter salads, and an expanded range of shareable dishes aimed at group dining.

“Our menu is a reflection of who we are,” Ahmed says. “The wholesome bowl comes from the sister who prioritises clean eating. The kids’ plates are built around the needs of the siblings with young children. The visually striking dishes are inspired by the one who cares about presentation. And the kofta - that’s our family’s recipe, updated by the brother who’s always experimenting with flavour.”

With current locations in Heliopolis, Giza, and Mohandiseen, and a new branch planned for New Cairo, Al Abou Shakrais positioning itself as an evolution of the original brand—rooted in tradition but led by a new generation.
