Tawlet Yvonne Is Serving Up a Slice of Beirut in the Heart of Maadi
Yvonne is actually the owner's grandmother, but the place bears more meaning than it representing a certain person.
"Yvonne is a feeling, not a person," says Safa Salem of Tawlet Yvonne. In reality, Yvonne is actually the owner's grandmother, but the place bears more meaning than it representing a certain person.
In Lebanon, people go to their grandmothers and there's always something cooking, and that's what Tawlet Yvonne capitalises on: those reminiscing sentiments of home. Salem explains that whatever grandma makes; like here in Egypt, if Teita makes it, you have to eat it!
Similarly, Tawlet Yvonne reminiscing over the Lebanese hospitality essence by serving Lebanese homecooked staples like molokhia and rice, dejaj and rice, kabseh bel seneya, moughrabieh, and rotating plat de jour that change according to the chef's mood. They also offer breakfast items like labneh, jebneh, and man'oucheh, as well as ideal selections for brunches (srsly tho, this spot is perf for brunches) – all delicious enough to warrant second servings!
"Yvonne is nostalgia. She is everything we miss and everything we love about Lebanon," continues Salem. "Nestled in one of Maadi's old villas, Tawlet Yvonne offers a taste of our home in Lebanon."
Not only is the food nostalgic, but the music is as well! The vibes of the garden invites you to stay for as long as you'd like. You can head there for coffee, and bring your friends or pets, and you'll always find something on the table.
This Saturday, Tawlet Yvonne is hosting a brunch and an open buffet, with music that revives old Lebanese culture from the likes of Fayrouz. Head there and relish in the vibrant atmosphere that will have you feeling like you've travelled to Lebanon without any plane tickets!
