WATCH: This Spot in Zamalek Serves the Japanese Equivalent of Taa’mey

Serving up scores of Takoyaki, Zamalek’s Yamatako is Egypt’s only Japanese fast-food joint.

See these moves? They’re the moves of someone who knows his Takoyaki is literal fire. A ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ spot in Zamalek, Japanese fast food restaurant Yamatako, founded by Cairo-based Japanese Chef, Saiji Yamazaki, is all about authentic Japanese street food.

Though Yamatako’s menu is filled with all sorts of goodies, they specialise in one thing us Egyptians can whole-heartedly appreciate: Takoyaki, the Japanese equivalent of Taa’meya (or falafel if you’re Alexandrian.) Made from a batter of flour, soy sauce, eggs, octopus, fish stock, onions, and ginger, this blasting ball of protein is then drenched in ‘special sauce’ and served up to swiftly savour.

The verdict? A slay.

But if perhaps octopus is not your thing, you’ll be glad to hear Yamatako (not to be confused with Egyptian phrase ‘yama takol’) has a menu brimming with Katsudon chicken bowls, all sorts of ramen bowls, and other Japanese street food favourites we’ll leave you to discover.

Yamatako is located on Brazil street in Zamalek, and is open every day except Sunday from 2 PM to 10 PM.
