Egypt Just Registered a New Type of Mango - and Her Name is Cleopatra

Patra if you’re nasty…

Ziyad El-Helbawy

Craving some mangoes? Craving some new mangoes? Well, we’re glad to report that your very niche desires and dreams may have just been fulfilled, seeing as Egypt has just registered a new variation of Egyptian mango, amusingly called ‘Cleopatra’ for reasons beyond our comprehension - but slay, sorry Oweis.

Registered by the Horticultural Research Institute, part of the Agricultural Research Centre, this new variety is fibreless, sweet, and promises a hefty harvest. Cleopatra mangoes, grown from Giza’s seedling trees, turn a striking orange with a red blush when ripe, weighing in at 350-450 grams each. Expect them to blossom from late February to April, with the first fruits arriving by July.
