Pizza Hawawshi? Downtown Cairo’s Al Zaeem Says ‘Yes’

We’re lactose and tolerating this one.

Fatafeet El-Share

This is SceneEats correspondent Fatafeet El-Share' reporting live from Downtown Cairo’s Al Zaeem, whereby a certain pizza hawawshi concoction drew my cheese-loving self (pizza pun intended) two steps too close to what would soon become my hyperfixation dish of choice during the month of January.

For context, the time is currently ‘way past working hours’, and the weather strikes a balance - crisp enough to justify my trench coat, yet not cold to the extent that my fingers acquire an impervious shell, hindering me from messaging the group chat with critical, real-time updates. If Mo4 Network has taught me one thing, it is the importance of ‘NOW NOW NOW’ when reporting on massive developments - in this case, food culture alterations that are changing the course of hawawshi consumption.

The core of said development remains the same, a classic ‘crispy on the outside and soft on the inside’ minced meat (the source of which should never be questioned) sandwich. However, whilst the heart and soul of the dish remain unchanged, the staple’s ‘OOTD’ if you will, is, well, different - a ‘veggie show’ (Scene Styled am I doing this right?) on a plate.

There’s cheese (we’ll call that the turtle neck), some cubed red and green peppers (those would be the newly added skinny scarves of the ensemble) and tomatoes (the sometimes misunderstood but lofty nonetheless, mittens). Gheza ya’ny.

Anyways, duty calls.

Ashofko another day,

Fatafeet El Share’.
