Sui is a Vault of Viennoiserie in the Very Heart of Maadi
Offering both sweet and savoury goods, French influence is clear in every aspect of Sui’s approach to the art of baking.
Cairo is not short of a bakery; indeed, many of the best are in Maadi. But Sui is one of the few bringing genuine Parisian flair to the decadent baked good scene. From caramelised pear tarts to savoury chicken and Gruyere cheese quiches, this French-inspired spot - and its burgeoning menu of indulgence - is flourishing under the watchful eye of Founder and CEO May Badawi.
“Since my first experiences of entrepreneurship in Egypt, I have dreamed of bringing a brand-new way of enjoying baked goods to the country,” Badawi tells SceneEats. “Sui looks to create something new, exciting and delicious by giving an innovative face to the world’s most beloved and indulgent comfort food: baked goods.”
Raised through French education, and starting her professional career working for a French company, Badawi found herself being sent to Paris for assignments from an early age. “I deeply appreciated the opportunity, not only for the professional growth but also for the cultural enrichment it provided,” Badawi explains. “The trips opened my eyes to Paris - a city of art, sculpture, paintings, music, cinema, architecture, and, of course, the best croissants in the world.”
Combined with her background in consulting, these experiences were the perfect storm that led Badawi to begin her own entrepreneurial journey. “Upon returning home, I nurtured a dream of starting a boulangerie that would offer perfectly crafted products in a simple, classic, yet trendy way,” she recalls. “Successful businesses should be driven by both passion and purpose.”
For Badawi, that combination of passion and purpose manifested itself in this fresh new Maadi bakery. “To me, Sui is more than just a bakery - it’s a beacon of inspiration and innovation in Egypt’s culinary landscape, spreading happiness and indulging in the art of baking, one delicious treat at a time.”
