Cinematographer and Photographer Salma El Kashef Kicks off Instagram Page to Celebrate and Document Her Home-Cooking Journey

Renowned Egyptian cinematographer and photographer Salma El Kashef recently launched a new super aesthestic Instagram page documenting her journey of home-cooking. The page features anything El Kashef feels like cooking, ranging from dishes like the legendary Lesan Asfour soup, Sanayet Batates with Chicken to desserts like delish Lotus Cakes, and boasts a super cozy, relatable vibe throughout, with the message that cooking at home shouldn’t have rules, and should be as experimental and improvisational as you’d like it to be.

Growing up, El Kashef never really cooked at home, but started exploring the kitchen when she got engaged. Inspired by her mother, the cinematographer started to experiment in the kitchen, without feeling the need to follow recipes to a tee, but instead cooks in the way she feels like.  

“I didn’t really want to stylize my food Instagram page,” El Kashef tells SceneEats, “I experiment with cooking like I do with photography – like when I use certain settings others would find ‘wrong’ – and in cooking I also like to do what I feel and improvise with different spices in different dishes. I really feel cooking is an art; and there is no strictly right or wrong recipe.”

El Kashef, who is known for her black and white aesthetic, chose to brighten up her brand with her food Instagram page, to show her lighter side: “What I also love about this account is that it shows off a different side of me other than the artistic side you can find on my professional accounts,” she adds, “My Instagram page is like my world. It’s my colourful side that no one usually sees.”
