‘Food on Four’ is the Food Series Exploring Mobile Kitchens, Food Trucks and Stalls in Cairo and Around the World
Travel on a journey exploring food trucks in Egypt, MENA and the rest of the world through Sarah Khan’s food series ‘Food on Four.’
Any well-seasoned traveller will tell you that some of the best culinary experiences they experienced while travelling: experiences that really allow them to immerse themselves in a country’s culture and culinary traditions is when they ate at a food truck. Believing in the convenience, versatility and character of food and stalls is Laila Khan, a British film director who – in November 2019 – launched an cleverly and aptly-named show called ‘Food on Four’ which fascinatingly explores food trucks, food stalls and mobile kitchens in Cairo, the Middle East and all around the world. The show also feature restaurants that take street food into the kitchen, such as Zooba.
In Cairo, ‘Food on Four’ has explored Boho Bun, Zooba, Street 306, ByBike and Gracias and features the chefs making the food trucks’ signature dishes, and Khan sits down for a taste test explaining the different flavour profiles, textures and overall culinary experience of the different dishes, whether it’s ByBike’s decadent sweet potato with chocolate sauce or BohoBun’s delish Boho Burger.
“It’s not just about food. We also like to give our viewers a taste of culture,” Khan tells SceneEats, “It’s an international show, and each episode is shot in a different city. I’ve also found that food trucks are extremely economical, cost-effective and serve as a gateway to opening a restaurant. It’s every chef’s dream to own a mobile kitchen.”
‘Food on Wheels’ has also filmed episodes in Dubai and Marrakesh and plans to film future episodes in Qatar, Jordan, Lebanon, Bahrain and Kuwait. If you’re into food series, you’re in luck because Khan has also started another series entitled ‘Baklava Gone Black’ which takes viewers through the journey of oriental dessert-making, specifically filmed in the factory of the Jordanian brand ‘Zalatimo Sweets’ in Istanbul (while experimenting with different flavours like charcoal and squid ink). Khan also recently launched a show in Egypt – which will, in the future extend to rest of the MENA region – called FoodUps TV which explores food startups in the region.
