What the Crust Awarded 'Top Africa 2021' by Top 50 Pizza

Huge news, folks! We all already know that What the Crust is the first and only pizzeria in all of Africa to officially be affiliated to the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN) in Italy. It also happens to be the first business that is woman-led in the Arab world when it comes to pizza businesses that are BFFs with AVPN. But, there's more to that story because the Maadi pizza joint just nabbed a couple of other accomplishments.

Like there are awards for bars and restaurants, there are also awards and rankings for something equally as popular: pizza. The 50 Top Pizza ranking aims to applaud the best pizzas in Italy and around the world. This year, we see What the Crust winning not just once but twice. Not only are they included in 10 Best Neapolitan Pizzerias Outside of Italy, they also took the Top Africa 2021 Award.

''You have no idea how monumental this is for us,'' says owner Dareen Akked to SceneEats. ''50 Top Pizza is like the Michelin Guide for pizza! This is the highest recognition I have probably ever received. I am so proud of us all and of our amazing team. I'm so thankful for being in Egypt, for being in Maadi, for being amongst family.''
