Jazeel Designs Serves Up History on a Plate
These locally-produced tableware products tell a story about the country they come from.
Merging love of national history and its stories with the practical medium that is tableware, Jazeel Designs is the local brand creating a new stream of dinnerware that begins with “once upon a time.”
Founded by Radwa Hamada two years ago, Jazeel took off at a time when there wasn’t a lot of variety in locally-produced tableware.”I love our history and arts and culture, so each collection revolves around a different point in Egyptian history,” Hamada told us. The theme of their first collection centred around the folklore tale of Safira Aziza, followed by one on Abuzaid El Helaly, with the most recent collection celebrating Nubia.
Jazeel’s porcelain products are manufactured in a heat-safe manner and then go through a zakhrafa process by women from Inshas village before being packaged and sent off for deliveries. “When I’m looking at the fact that I’m retelling precious stories and keeping them alive while also being able to support these women, that’s the biggest motive pushing me forward,” Hamada told us.
For their upcoming collections, Jazeel is looking at pharaonic stories for inspiration as well as another collection on Safira Aziza very soon. To shop their collection, visit jazeeldesigns.com.
