UN Says That Egypt Is the Fifth Biggest Producer of Tomatoes in the World
And that's the tea, sis.
Ah, the humble tomato. Easily considered one of the most versatile, accessible staple vegetables in the world, owing to its depth of flavour and its ability to amp up so many it’s no wonder than that tomatoes are one of the most commonly used vegetables (or fruit? Which side are you on?) in Egypt and serves as a basis for so many Egyptian dishes. Whether it’s vegetables with salsa over rice, fresh af tomato sauce over a warm plate of koshary or in a rich dem3a served over molokhia, Egyptians and tomatoes have an unyielding, unshaking connection.
This is all probably also because tomatoes are the largest food crop in Egypt. In fact, the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation has just released a report stating that Egypt is the 5th biggest producer of tomatoes worldwide, and that Om El Donia produces a whopping nine million tonnes per year, with China in the lead at first place, followed by India, Turkey and the US, consecutively.
