Uzbek Manti Found a Home in Nasr City
Uzbek manti have found a home in Nasr City, bringing a distinct Central Asian tradition to Cairo’s food scene and connecting generations of Uzbek students and expats.
From rolling pin to boiling pot, these Uzbek manti made us question everything we thought we knew about Central Asian cuisine and its role in Cairo’s food scene.
The meat-filled dough balls look like a cross between Chinese dumplings and Arab shish barak, but they’re quite distinct. Large and steamed, the Uzbek variation of manti can be filled with lamb, beef, onions and sometimes even pumpkin.
At Golden Plov in Nasr City, manti can be served as a yogurt-topped dish on its own or as a soup. The restaurant is conveniently located near Al Azhar University, where Uzbek expats have come to study for generations. Chef Eslam tells us about his own journey finding home in the heart of Cairo.
Who knew Uzbek manti would feel so at home in Cairo?
