9 Out-Of-The-Box Foods You Probably Didn't Know You Could Get in Egypt

Because who wouldn't like to eat some jellyfish or cola chicken?

Staff Writer

While us Egyptians, don’t consider the contents of our sofra too strange, to a foreigner our molokheya could be an absolute culinary nightmare. Now that we’ve got that established, let’s take a tour of some foods from around the world that you probably didn't know you can grab right here in Egypt.

Wagyu Gold Steak from ESCA

If you want to feel a bit bougie and extra. Actually, wait, scratch everything we just said because we want to start again. If you want to feel very, very bougie and extra, the only way to go is with ESCA’s Wagyu steak that's covered with edible 24 karat gold leaves. Oh, and for the (low?) price of EGP 950++, it's all yours.

Naengmyeon (Cold Noodles) from GayaTomatoMinaHana

You've probably had noodles at some point in your life, but have you ever had ice cold noodles? Like, noodles drowning in a bowl of cold water and cubes of ice? Well, naengmyeon is an extremely popular dish in Korea, specifically in the summer, and it's a dish made of thin, chewy noodles that are made with buckwheat and potato or sweet potato starch.

Sushi Burger from Sushirito

Contrary to popular belief, buns don't need to be made out of bread. Why, you ask? Because they can totes be made out of rice instead -- or at least that's what the Alexandria joint believes.

Balut (Duck Embryo) from Bahay Kubo

Although the Filipino store doesn't have a physical address, it thrives on virtual delivery. You can order literal duck embryos (the ideal balut is said to be 17 days old) from their Facebook page, but you'll have to cook it yourself. Don't fret, however, it's quite easy -- all you have to do is boil them for 20-30 minutes and eat it immediately.

Jellyfish from 8 Restaurant

If you ever find yourself feeling adventurous, then you should head to -- quite possibly -- the country's most expensive restaurant eat jellyfish. Oh, and make sure to be ready for its slippery and slightly crunchy texture.

Sea Cucumber from Dumpling House

These slug-like animals are used either fresh or braised in various dishes; Dumpling House, however, only provides its braised form. Much like squids, sea cucumbers are tasteless by themselves but are usually infused with flavour from other ingredients like meats, seafood, shiitake mushrooms and vegetables to elevate it.

Ostrich Egg from Alfa Market

Believe it or not, they taste a lot like chicken eggs, except they're obviously much bigger. Oh, and Alpha Market sells the for some reason.

Tteokbokki (Spicy Rice Cakes) from GayaTomatoMinaSeoul BarbecueHana

A popular Korean street food, tteokbokki basically consists of chewy, cylindrical rice cakes that are dipped in a sweet and spicy sauce.

Coca-Cola Fried Chicken from Joy Luck

We all love Coca-Cola and we certainly all love fried chicken, so why not have both of them at the same time at Joy Luck? Oh, and when we say together, we literally mean that the chicken is literally deep fried in Coca-Cola.
